CAMPER AGES: rising 1st to 12th grade

TYPE OF CAMP: Overnight/Sleepaway. two night sessions for Buddies in Christ/Special Needs Camp

CAMPER GENDER(S): Coed Campers.

AFFILIATION(S): Christian. Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

BRIEF CAMP DESCRIPTION: Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp & Retreat Center sits on 257 acres in the Shenandoah Valley. We offer eight weeks of Summer Camp to rising 1st through 12th graders. Campers experience daily worship and Bible study, plus a large range of activities. Campers can expect a week packed with fun! They'll get to swim, canoe, fish, creek walk, play small and large group games, challenge themselves on our low ropes course, hike, cook over a campfire, create crafts, learn archery, gain culinary skills, and explore the furnace ruins on camp property. Each week, Chaplains from supporting congregations join us in leading the campers in morning worship, Bible study, and campfire and evening devotion. Caroline Furnace combines small and large group -style camping in an outdoor, faith-filled setting, all to create an unforgettable summer camp experience for your camper.

SPECIAL NEEDS CAMPERS: Come experience camp together! Buddies in Christ camp is June 30-July 2 and July 2-4, and is designed for campers rising 1st to 12th grade who may not be able to come to camp on their own. We recognize that traditional summer camp has inherent demands that can make it difficult for campers with special needs - to include a busy schedule, high levels of activity, and uneven terrain. For Special Needs Camp, we work with each family to meet the needs of each individual.

Each camper comes for two nights with at least one parent. Buddies in Christ Camp is based in the Cabin Village. Group size is intentionally small (15 campers per session) to maximize individualized attention. Every camper has a high school or college aged "buddy" to guide them throughout the day. Parents are given optional free time on the second day of camp (July 1 or July 3, depending on session), and we will have parent activities and local business discounts available.

All camper activities are challenge by choice and include campfires, canoeing, fishing, swimming, yoga and play-based worship. Camp concludes with an optional family outing on the third day. The entire schedule is adapted to allow for longer transition times, flexibility, and more down time.

We feel it is important to discuss the realities of camp with each family, and what we can do to help each camper. The Cabin Village is wheelchair accessible, with two wheelchair accessible Cabins and accessibility to all common areas. There will most likely be two or three families per Cabin. The Cabins do not have air conditioning but we provide fans. The Cabin Village is wooded and nearly all activities will be accessed via trails. It can be humid and buggy during the day in the summer, with cool, dark nights.

CAMP INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES OFFERED:
Theater, Music/Band, Fine Arts/Crafts, Horses/Equestrian, Waterfront/Aquatics, Team Sports, Academics, Adventure, Travel, Wilderness/Nature, and more. Canoeing, Fishing, Archery, Hiking, Culinary, History, Caving, Rock Climbing,

We have a low ropes course, a 5 acre lake for swimming, canoeing and fishing, a prayer labyrinth, an extensive trail system, 8 large group fire circles, National Forest access, and incredible stargazing.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Serving the community since 1957, our mission is to provide unforgettable faith, education and renewal experiences in God’s creation for all God’s people. As a separate non-profit incorporated entity of the ELCA we provide opportunities to a wide variety of public and private schools, churches, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. We partner with local businesses and organizations to provide valuable services that develop current and future leaders for our community and the world.

Throughout your training week, you will study and practice the art of leading others with the help of our Leadership Team. YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: “Theater by kids, for kids!” Encore Stage & Studio has been serving children and their families in Arlington for 47 years. Their mission is to build life-long appreciation for live theater by involving young people in all aspects of theater arts — onstage, backstage, in the classroom, and in the audience. Encore achieves this through two primary avenues: high quality, developmentally appropriate theatrical productions that are by and for young people, and enriching, curriculum-enhancing educational classes, workshops and summer programs. Encore Stage will perform and offer an activity featuring theatre and improv games for children and families, run by their performers (ages 9–18) and supervised by their Director.

Today, Encore has grown to include our production season and school year education classes and summer programs. Encore presents five fully realized productions each year under the guidance and direction of experienced theater professionals. Encore is unique in offering dramatic productions in which every actor and every behind–the-scenes technician is a young person under 18 years of age. Our summer production program, casts youth ages 15 and older, as well as college students and adult community members. Encore’s multi-age structure encourages mentoring and role modeling between older and younger participants. Our production opportunities are provided to participants at no cost.

In conjunction with, and as a foundation for, our on-stage productions, Encore offers a year-round series of theater classes, workshops, and summer camps. Stage Door, Scenes for Tweens, and It’s Elementary. Literacy and playwriting have become an important focus within our educational programming through Encore’s “Play-Ground” for middle school students.

In addition, we have recently started a number of creative programs designed to expand our reach in the community and our offerings for our students. These include the Musical Theatre Intensive, for singers in the 8th grade and older; the Encore Traveling Theatre Club, through which Encore participants attend plays at other theaters in the area, including Arena Stage, The Roundhouse Theatre, and Signature Theatre; and Evenings with the Pros, in which Encore participants take acting workshops from local professional actors.

Cheryl was also a member of The Second City National Touring Company. She worked for 20 years in Hollywood as a professional actress, comedy coach, assistant voice casting agent, voice-over artist, director, and producer of comedy shows. In the 1990s, Cheryl's comedy classes for kids and teens were rated as "Best in L.A." by the alternative news weekly New Times Los Angeles.

Cheryl is also an individual acting coach who offers private lessons for actors who need help to prepare for auditions. She also teaches beginners and advanced actors practical advice about monologues, scene study, and improvisation with an emphasis on how to practice good diction and non-verbal communication skills that can often make an audition more effective and memorable.

Since 1995, Cheryl has taught acting to about 6,200 children, teens, and adults in both California and Virginia. Cheryl also appeared on several network TV programs including as a series regular in the NBC show Against the Grain in 1993. She was also both a regular actor and a writer for The Motown Revue Starring Smokey Robinson in 1985. After re-locating from LA to Virginia In 2007, she started her own small acting school in the city of Falls Church for students from northern Virginia. But students also come from as far away as Baltimore, Frederick, Annapolis, Richmond, Haymarket, and Leesburg. Her school features small classes, private lessons, and audition-preparation coaching for advanced students who need as much individual time and attention as possible. Cheryl designs her classes and monolgues for all ages including adults without previous acting experience. Her students have been in films, won parts in school and community theater productions, and have filmed commercials and public service announcements.

Our new air-conditioned classroom offers ample free parking in front of a deluxe apartment complex club house that is located in a safe residential neighborhood near to the East Falls Church Orange Line Metro Stop and to major highways. Cheryl Rhoads is a proud member of the acting profession. CAMP LOCATION: Located in beautiful Bath County, Virginia, Camp Mont Shenandoah offers 60-acres of fields, woods with hiking trails, and waterfront access to a pristine mountain river. We are well located, just under an hour’s drive from the intersection of I-81 and I-64 in Central Virginia. For those coming from farther away, special arrangements for shuttle transportation to/from regional airports can be arranged. Our surrounding community offers a number of additional activities and amenities, including The Homestead Resort, George Washington National Forest, Douthat State Park, Garth Newel Music Center, and charming historic communities like Hot Springs and Warm Springs. Please visit our website for lots of camp photos and videos.

CAMP FACILITIES: Our traditional camp buildings range from cozy screened cabins to large lodge-style gathering places. Many of the original camp structures remain, such as the 1920s dining hall (where girls gather three times each day to eat family style, home-cooked meals) and West Lodge (where performances delight campers of every age). While we are rustic, we do have electricity and all our bathhouses offer flush toilets and hot water showers.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Founded in 1927 by Nannie West, Camp Mont Shenandoah is one of the oldest girls’ camps in Virginia. The exceptional Mont Shenandoah experience has kept families returning for generations and inspired numerous campers to return as counselors. Camp Mont Shenandoah’s mission is to create an excellent summer camp experience for girls. In a safe and caring environment, our camp provides the setting and structure each girl needs to grow -- physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.

Through cabin living, fun, challenging activities, relationships with peers and staff, and longstanding traditions, we promote life skills that instill confidence, develop a girl’s sense of self and foster independence. Campers leave Mont Shenandoah having learned the guiding principles of our five virtues: Love, Loyalty, Friendship, Sportsmanship, and Spiritual Awareness. Camp Mont Shenandoah boasts a high rate of returning program staff, almost all of whom are former campers or junior counselors. Counselors are selected based on their maturity, stability, dependability, leadership skills, ability to relate to girls of all ages, sense of humor as well as their knowledge and demonstrated skills in the activity for which they are hired to teach. The camper-to-staff ratio is five to one, assuring each girl ample individual attention

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: In 2005, Camp Mont Shenandoah started The Camp Spirit Scholarship to help campers attend camp that may not otherwise be able to due to financial constraints. The Camp Spirit Scholarship is a fund within Community Foundation for Rockbridge, Bath and Alleghany, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

OTHER CAMP INFO: If horses are your passion, you’ll be able to enjoy a comprehensive horseback riding program designed for girls of all ages and skill levels at Cabell Stable, our equestrian facility built in 2001. Our goals at Cabell Stable at Camp Mont Shenandoah are to improve riding skills, teach proper horse care and barn maintenance, learn to appreciate and value horses, and lastly (but certainly not least!) to have fun. From the moment they set foot in Cabell Stable, campers are taught to respect each horse and how to properly handle them on the ground and in the saddle. Our lessons are based on hunt seat equitation that focuses on the rider’s form. We limit our horseback riding classes to no more than five girls in the ring at a time, ensuring adequate instruction for each camper. Safety is of primary importance at Cabell Stable. When mounted, all girls must wear an approved (ATSM-SEI) protective helmet, long pants (or breeches) and boots with a heel. (We have helmets for campers to borrow if they do not have their own).

SUMMER CAMP JOBS:
Camp Tall Timbers has a 4 -1 ratio of campers to staff.

Each summer much of our staff is made up of returning employees or former campers who are now in college.

The entire team at Camp Tall Timbers is a wonderful mix of teachers, coaches and college students. Each staff member is carefully selected for their teaching expertise in a given activity area, their personality, as well as their interest in working with children.

All staff members report to camp several days ahead of our campers so that they may go through our Counselor Institute. At Counselor Institute we thoroughly review daily responsibilities, situations that may arise, expectations for staff conduct and emergency procedures. Additionally, by the time our campers arrive, our staff has reviewed all the information about their individually assigned campers as provided by their parents. This is one more way we strive to ensure a safe, fun and personalized camp experience.

In 2017, thanks to the support, the time and the generosity of so many people, the first ever Envision Lead Grow cross-country tour was an overwhelming success. The national Envision Lead Grow 7-City Bus Tour kicked off the Envision Lead Grow entrepreneur program in the summer of 2017, making stops in 7 different cities (Atlanta, GA; Baltimore, MD; Memphis, TN; Norfolk, VA; Philadelphia, PA; Richmond, VA; and Greensboro, NC) across the United States. The ELG team shared its fast-paced, fun-filled curriculum, “The 8 Seeds to Success in Business”, written by Dr. Angela Reddix Founder and CEO herself, during a week-long summer camp in each city.

In 2018, ELG plans to expand its reach by serving two more regions- Bowling Green, KY; and Charleston, WV. Rather than touring each city like we did in 2017, in the summer of 2018, a total of 250 girls will travel from all branches to our home city of Norfolk to begin or expand their "8 Seeds to Success in Business" growth, together.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: ELG's Entrepreneurial Immersion Summer Camp is free of charge to our Girl Bosses and their family.

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Envision Lead Grow is a Norfolk-based non-profit organization designed to introduce entrepreneurship to middle school girls through camps, mentoring, webinars and conferences. Through this repeated exposure and practice, girls develop entrepreneurial, STEAM-infused skills that allow them to contribute to and stimulate local economies.

The Envision Lead Grow Entrepreneurial Program consists of 4 parts:
Summer Immersion
9-Month Mentoring Support
All City, All Girls Webinars
The Entrepreneur Institute

Summer Immersion
The Envision Lead Grow program begins HERE, at one of our entrepreneurial immersion summer camps. Middle school girls from around your community will come together at a sleepaway camp to learn the building blocks of becoming an entrepreneur. Many of the girls start the session as strangers and will leave as great friends. Over the course of the summer program, participants will take part in exercises to help them think bigger, to apply entrepreneurial, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) infused skills to everyday life and to make better decisions. At the end of the summer immersion camp, these young women will leave with a solid business idea, a Passion Pitch they can use to sell their idea to others and confidence to take their company - and community - to the next level.

9-Month Mentoring Support
The Summer Immersion summer camp experience is just the beginning of the process for these budding Girl Bosses. We partner with adult mentors in each city where Envision Lead Grow sets up. After the summer camp is finished, female volunteers within the community step in to guide, to support and to be a sounding board for these young entrepreneurs. Over the course of the school year, the mentors check in with their young mentees to keep them on track.

All City, All Girls Webinars
It can be lonely to be in business for yourself, so Envision Lead Grow designed a way to ensure these young entrepreneurs never feel isolated. Aside from the check-ins with their mentors, ELG girls and mentors have the chance to meet each other through virtual meetings. Through these monthly video calls, the girls get to learn from ELG Founder Angela Reddix, as well as, each other. We believe that it is important to have a network of support through not only their ELG branch city mentor, but other ELG peers and mentors from all branches, too.

The Entrepreneur Institute
Envision Lead Grow will reward business owners who are committed to making their companies thrive. The Entrepreneur Institute is a multi-day field trip that will bring together the leaders of Fortune 500 companies, mentors and business educators. It’s an all-expenses paid trip for the girls who participate in the mentoring sessions, the All-City Webinars and the ELG business challenges. ELG Girl Bosses who are engaged in the program can earn a spot in The Entrepreneur Institute.

OTHER CAMP INFO: Girls will learn the "8 Seeds to Success in Business" curriculum, written and developed by Dr. Angela D. Reddix, Founder, President and CEO of ARDX, a mult-million dollar management and technology consulting company based in Norfolk, Virginia. This summer, the "8 Seeds" curriculum has been enhanced to include STEAM-infused exercises and activities. In addition to entrepreneurial, STEAM-infused practices, girls will have opportunity for choice time activities, such as yoga, drama (daily improvisation games), singing, dancing, creative writing, visual art, sports (volleyball, soccer, basketball, or tennis), swimming, blogging, cooking, and/or hiking. The girls will have the opportunity to explore Hampton Roads and experience some form of culture that is unique or unfamiliar to them. By the end of the week of camp, each girl will have a venture with a business plan ready to begin making sales, increased level of self-efficacy, greater self-control, conscientiousness, evaluation of short-term and long-term goals, intuition for decision making, and the ability to pitch her business venture successfully.

CAMP SESSION DATES & FEES:
The ELG Class of 2019 will begin with Summer Immersion. This year, Summer Immersion is a one-week long, all-expenses paid, sleepaway camp hosted at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Girls currently in the 4th-6th grade are invited to apply! Once girls are in the program, they can continue with us until they graduate from high school.

Transportation will be provided for all camp sessions upon acceptance and camp session assignment, according to your cohort and home city location. Contact ELG to find out which camp session we have reserved for you.

Session #1: June 16-21
Session #2: June 23-28
Session #3: July 7-12
OR

Each cast only has 13-14 actors and 2-3 tech students, ensuring everyone receives exceptional, individualized training. The result? Real transformation, a tight & supportive ensemble, and a 70% retention rate.

Our students don’t just shine on stage, however. They shine off stage – with remarkable growth in independence, confidence, and close friendships that truly last – throughout middle and high school, and into college. That’s the Traveling Players difference. A kind, vibrant, joyful community where young artists are happy, can be themselves, and find “their people.”

Our holistic acting programs simultaneously ground kids in a connected community while expanding their understanding of the world. We give kids plenty of fresh air & exercise, complete with weekly campouts in tents & s’mores, and are completely unplugged! (We are phone free!)

“Patrick has gained incredible self-confidence, treasured friendships, and outstanding acting skills in his 4 years (and running) at Traveling Players. It’s a wonderfully supportive positive experience. The directors have an uncanny knack for knowing exactly what roles the students need for their growth and success.” – Erika, Patrick’s mother

Our auditions are first come, first decided. The sooner you audition/interview, the greater chance there is that space will still be available in the program you want. We’d love to welcome your child into our kind and vibrant community!

Founding Artistic Director Jeanne Harrison has taught for The Folger Shakespeare Library, Catholic University, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Loyola University (MD), The Chapin School (NYC) and Interlochen Center for the Arts (MI), where she directed the Shakespeare program.
